Fitchburg is a suburb of Madison, Wisconsin, in Dane County. It combines the conveniences of city life with the appeal of a rural community, linking Wisconsin’s famous countryside to the city of Madison.
Fitchburg was incorporated into the Madison Metropolitan Area in 1983, after a ruling from the Wisconsin State Supreme Court. Since then, the city has developed family-oriented neighborhoods, expanded its technology and economics, and designed green spaces and parks for residents to enjoy. It now boasts a growing artistic community and some of the best bike trails in Wisconsin.
Fitchburg covers about 35 square miles with a population of just over 25,000. There are about 10,000 households, a third of which have children. The average household size is 2.45 and the average household income is over $50,000. 6.4% of the population are below the poverty line. Most of the city’s residents are children or between the ages of 25 and 64.
Schools and Churches
The city is located within 3 public school districts: Madison, Oregon, and Verona. It also offers several private options, including:

There are also a number of colleges and universities.
Several church options are available in the area, including Lutheran, United, and nondenominational. There is also a Hindu temple and a Buddhist Society.
The Madison Metro Bus Service covers the city, and there are nearby interstate highways. The city is near the Dane County Regional Airport, but it is also located near multiple metropolises with major airports. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is only about an hour and a half away, and Chicago is two and a half hours distant.
Things to Do
Fitchburg has activities for families, the young and hipster, and those in retirement. The city has 730 acres of green space in 95 different areas. These spaces include recreational areas, green ways, a golf course, and a community center. The city is also known for its world-class bike trails. In 2012, the League of American Bicyclists designated Fitchburg as a Bicycle Friendly Community.
During the summer months, the McKee Farms Park puts on an outdoor concert series. The concerts are an excellent opportunity to try local brews, experience trendy music, and enjoy a night out. For those with kids, the park offers a splash pad and dream park. The city also has a Farmers Market that hosts a strawberry festival in June.
The city has a library and a senior center. For those with a more adventurous taste, it is also is home to a kite-boarding and kite-surfing shop that offers lessons.
