Deemed one of the “100 Best Small Places to Live” by CNN, Oregon, Wisconsin is humble town conveniently located just 7 miles south of Wisconsin’s capital city. Despite being a lesser known residential region, this area still features several interesting qualities that reflect it’s unique small-town charm.

History

This small village of Dane County first settled by a man named Bartlet Runey in 1841. The settlement was originally dubbed “Rome Corners” however, the name was later updated to “Oregon” in 1864. Nevertheless, this town held dearly to it’s roots by making “Rome Corners” the official name of a street located just south of the village.

Schools

The town features several schooling options in the area including Netherwood Elementary, Brooklyn Elementary, Prarieview Elementary, and Oregon High School. The school district prides itself on focusing on competency, character, culture and community. Recently, the district ranked in the top three amongst all school districts in Dane County. Moreover, the University of Wisconsin is stationed only 15 minutes away making the town of Oregon a prime location for educational needs.

Residents of this small town love their homes. Nearly 73% of the population owns it’s own home, and the average family income is reported to be $88,250 as of 2017. Median property values are reported at $238,800.

Attractions

Despite being a small village, this town has a variety of options for entertainment. One of which is a town favorite called Mulligan’s, which is an Irish pub serving up fresh food and drink. The area’s historical museum is another attraction worth visiting featuring guided tours open for all visitors. Lastly, Legends at Bergamot is a membership-based facility providing recreational opportunities for the residents in to play golf, swim, and play tennis. This facility can also be used as a venue for weddings and other special events. Membership-free recreational options include Jaycee Park, Lerner Conservation Park, and several other public parks. The town is also conveniently located a few minutes away from Madison, Wisconsin which offers a host of entertainment options for families.

Landmarks

The village’s rich history also yields some interesting and timeless landmarks worth seeing. One of which is the Red Brick School established in 1922 which once stood as the village’s main high school. It has now been rendered an establishment for businesses and corporations. Other places of interest include the Netherwood Block and the Original Water Tower, both of which are historical buildings preserved from the 1800’s.

There are several church options for those looking for faith-based fellowship. These options include Hillcrest Bible Church, The Vineyard, People’s United Methodist Church, and Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church to name a few.
